Be my Guest…Bernard Doughty

Carl Stahl Evita is hosting a LEEA Accredited Training Scheme (ATS) seminar on both days of LiftEx on October 16,17, entitled ‘Importance of Pre-Use Checking Equipment’. Here to tell us more is Bernard Doughty MD, Carl Stahl Evita.

Doughty has been managing director for five years. “We’re a German-owned company and Carl Stahl Evita was founded in the UK in 1998. We operate in four defined markets, three of which are quite close to what LEEA provides on the training side with product supply inspections and testing,” he said.

“We’re really looking forward to LiftEx this year. We were first approached to take part last year but unfortunately due to how busy we were with training we couldn’t do it. This year it’s been planned really well by LEEA well in advance. So I will be there along with Geoff Burkill the training manager offering a taster to some of the accredited training that we offer.

“Pre-use checking of equipment is very important for end users of lifting equipment, and I would say the least carried out check before a lift takes place. Equipment should be checked to make sure it's safe to use, even if it's already got a tag on it telling you it's been thoroughly examined by a competent person. It still needs to be checked because it could have been stored incorrectly or used incorrectly on a previous job and could be damaged. So, we feel it's a really good and important subject to cover.”

Talking about the most common lifting problems he sees today, Doughty said the main issue is lack of knowledge: “LEEA has been pressing very hard on that in the past few years to try and gain awareness within the industry and within lifting in general. And we champion that as well with our training arm and the other biggest issue is improper use of equipment.”

As well as hosting two ATS seminars, Carl Stahl Eviter is exhibiting at Stand 72 at LiftEx.

“We've got a new piece of lifting equipment, which we call the Finray Gripper or the Finray Grab, which has been developed by our German parent company. It's a new kind of ergonomic lifting device, which can adapt to any shape or form to pick up a piece of equipment or load in a safe, useful and efficient manner. So we'll be showcasing that on the stand along with various equipment from other manufacturers.”
